A fire has ravaged the Malicha camp for displaced persons in South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is the second fire in two months. More than 4,000 houses were destroyed, leaving thousands homeless.

United Methodist Bishop Gabriel Yemba Unda expressed his compassion for these people of God. “We are deeply saddened by these new tragedies,” said Unda. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims.”
Church, Congolese government unite against monkeypox
The Institut National des Recherches Biomédicales (National Institute for Biomedical Research) has set up a monkeypox research laboratory at the United Methodist Tunda General Hospital in Maniema province. The church has made its buildings available to the government for the laboratory.
Efforts for regionalization move forward
The Connectional Table, meeting online on July 13, and the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters, meeting online on July 22, each unanimously affirmed the work so far on a regionalization proposal for the global denomination.
Church gives hope to people living with HIV in Congo
With funding from the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries’ Global Health program, the church supports more than 100 women living with HIV in Bukavu in the Kivu Conference in eastern Congo. The program also is helping women in Central Congo.
United Methodists killed in Congo flooding
The Rev. Clément Kingombe Lutala said the overnight flooding on May 4 and 5 was catastrophic in the Bushushu village, where one church family lost 13 members. He said 300 people were injured and more than 500 homes have been destroyed.
